Aryan B., starting shooting guard of the team, had 16 points and multiple assists with his unselfish passing plays as BISV took the win 65-36. The game was an offensive and defensive clinic. It was clear from the start that Esperanza would need a miracle to win. The Varsity team has been on a roll at home and has almost won every single game playing at their own house. Today was no different.
From the get-go, point guard Robert J. asserted himself with his athleticism, speed, and quick thinking. He was all over the floor, scoring 13 points by blowing by defenders and finishing strong at the rim while also knocking down shots all over the perimeter and 3. Defensively, his eyes were stuck on the ball as he accumulated 4 steals, leading to easy baskets on the other end. Aryan was a stud in transition, racking up buckets from steals in addition to his threes.
The game was decided by the end of the first two quarters as it was 56 to 17 entering the third quarter!
The second half of the game was not as lopsided as Esperanza was able to go on a small scoring run led by their star point guard, Eddie W.. He made acrobatic shots and contested tough jumpers with ease, However, this wasn’t enough to surmount the huge lead the Bobcats had already made. The defense stayed tight even with the second unit being on the court. Despite being viewed as the shorter team, Basis had 4 total blocks coming from Tanush, Rishi, Aiden, and Thomas. Offensively, BISV only had 9 points in the last two quarters but came out on top with a large victory of 65-36.
After the game, the commentary crew talked with 6th man Justin W.. He made 11 points and 2 steals, demonstrating incredible efficiency from a long-range (3/5 – 60% on threes). We asked him about what was going well for him and he said, “Shots were just falling;” Aryan backed him up by saying “he has a great point guard who kept passing him the ball”. Aryan and Robert did a great job getting everyone involved, leading to a big team win. Even though it was a blowout win, Justin said that the Bobcats need to improve on defense by “Stopping that one kid (Eddie) on the other team. He had way too many points”. Justin’s analysis is on point as Eddie, the focal point of Esperanza’s offense, had 22 points. When we asked Eddie about his huge 22-point game and the things that went well for him despite the loss, he said, “Just hustling… on both sides of the ball. Just not giving up”.
Regarding what BISV did that day, Eddie said, “they had great defense… what could’ve gone better was the looks, the passes we rushed it a lot and we needa focus on handling the pressure”. Even though he had a game-high 22 points, the BISV defense came up big on Eddie’s teammates. It’s great to see such good sportsmanship from both the winners and losers.
No player was left out of the action on Thursday as everyone who saw the floor put up stats ranging from points to steals and blocks. Looking at scoring, Akshay had 8 points, Shiven had 6 points on two made threes, Suhaas had 3 points, Aiden had 2 points, Thomas had 2 points, and Rishi had 2 points. On the defensive end, the Bobcats had 15 steals, most of which were in the first half. Great defense led to easy offense as many of Basis’s points came in transition. In addition to the star guards, Rishi, Thomas, Shiven, and Rudro all helped rack up steals that led to the win.
Basis put on a defensive clinic in their explosive first half as constantly got steals and outran Esperanza on fast breaks. Congratulations to the BISV Boys Varsity Basketball Team on the great win as they advance to 8-4 on the season.
