From Los Altos down to Evergreen, the majority of seniors at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley have been subjugated to waking up at 5:30 AM. Shuffling into cars and trying not to doze off cruising down Highway 85S, it felt reminiscent of our freshman year days. It was September 2nd, and all the seniors were invited to congregate at Del Monte Park to watch the sunrise.
Although BISV is by no means a regular high school, the senior sunrise was our attempt to scrounge up what some might refer to as the “high school experience”.
Around America, it is a tradition that at the start of the school year, the graduating class would gather together outside and watch the sunrise: an ode to the start of their last year. Then, once college acceptances roll around and senioritis kicks in, all the seniors would gather once again and watch the sunset: a goodbye to their high school journey.
So, with the boys playing terrible frisbee, and the speakers blasting music, we gathered at the fields of Del Monte and witnessed the most anti-climactic sunrise ever. Covered by fog and with no sun in sight, it was a senior sunrise that had no sun rising. After pictures in the foggy mist, some seniors drove to The Breakfast Club at Midtown while others went back to school for first period. While our senior sunrise was not the most Instagrammable, it was special in its own right.
