Ever thought of supporting BISV and upholding school spirit, but were too scared to go up during the assemblies, in fear of being clowned on by friends for losing ? Well, consider trying out for BISV’s basketball team instead! Although this year’s tryouts have already been completed, I highly encourage you to join our team next year! The basketball team is a tight community you build, and one that will support you in both schoolwork and basketball skills.
I tried out for the basketball team five times since 8th grade, and made the team twice. Tryouts, even if you don’t make the team, are super fun. I had a blast at all of the tryouts, scrimmaging with my friends and just sticking around them for something that isn’t school-related. Furthermore, did I mention that exercising is so much more exciting with friends? Whenever I ran at practice alongside my teammates, it felt less tiring than it would have if I ran alone. Whenever I was tired, I always seemed to find more energy to keep playing, as I kept pushing myself, knowing that I shouldn’t let my team down.
Now, let’s say you got onto the team. First of all, congrats! You just placed yourself as one of the top 15 in BISV for basketball. Now, it is certainly a glamorous feeling to wipe the floor with some team at a home game, with your teachers, friends, and family cheering you on. This is where the fun begins: competing in a close game, fighting with your team to push for a victory, and maybe you can even be the one to pull off the “hero play” to save the game! Or, it could mark the beginning of a fun rivalry, as we play most teams twice throughout the year. Ultimately, playing on the court at your own school is a huge difference compared to playing at some random gym for club league, since you’re supporting a school, rather than just a private coach. I can affirm, since I’ve played for both clubs and the school, and know the different feeling in winning.
I didn’t even mention the amusing team-bonding events. Whether it’s getting food together or film sessions, these little get-togethers really allow you to get closer with the team and make lifelong friends. Making friends with younger or older individuals is a very interesting experience, as the younger individuals usually have a different view of the teachers you’ve had, and you’ll be able to exchange some thoughts on teachers.
I’ve enjoyed my time on JV, practicing three times a week, going to games, and hanging out with kids instead of sitting in front of your phone. So, if you’re bored or want to support the school, why not give it a try?
