In recent years, you may have heard of Poppy Playtime, an indie mascot horror game created by Mob Entertainment that revolves around a player exploring an abandoned toy factory as an ex-employee who returned after receiving a mysterious note. The game centers heavily on solving puzzles using a game mechanism called the “grabpack”, which allows the player to navigate around the factory and progress deeper into it, uncovering the dark secrets of past disasters. While the game sounds pretty simple and generic on the surface, what stands out is the monstrous, sentient “toys” that chase the player around the factory. Specifically, Huggy Wuggy, the huge blue mascot who appeared as the face of the first chapter of the game, stood out as an unsettling yet extremely marketable character who soon appeared as merchandise and plushies everywhere, with a surprisingly wide audience.
Now you may be wondering, what does all this have to do with the success of the most recent chapter of the game, released on February 18th? Well, fear not, we’re getting there. Firstly, though, let’s talk about the popularity of the previous chapters.
Surprisingly, Chapter 1, despite the popularity of its mascot, was not very well received. The major complaint that most fans had was that it was simply not long enough, with only about 30 minutes of gameplay as opposed to the other chapters, which are well over an hour on average. It just seemed like a test run from Mob Entertainment (which it probably was), and the overall sentiment from players was that the chapter would’ve done much better as a demo. Other than the Huggy Wuggy chase scene, which was under 5 minutes, the rest of the chapter was nothing too special. In fact, the chapter didn’t even grab much attention until after the release of chapters 2 and 3, when the Poppy Playtime franchise really began to rise in popularity. In fact, the only reason why people knew about it at all was due to Mob sending the game to YouTubers in the hopes that they would make content out of it. Eventually, many reported simply becoming so tired of seeing the fuzzy blue mascot in all of their recommended YouTube thumbnails that they just gave up and clicked on the video. Well, that certainly is a strategy.

Speaking of Chapter 2, while it is far from being the best chapter in the game, it did attract decent attention, with a stretchy spider toy monster named Mommy Long Legs being featured as the main antagonist of the chapter. The overall gameplay was much more complete than Chapter 1, leaving fans satisfied for the most part, with the chase scenes once again being regarded as one of the best parts of the chapter and eventually becoming a staple of Poppy Playtime.

Next up is Chapter 3. This chapter is simply incredible, leading the game in a much darker direction and introducing so much new lore for fans to analyze. In short, this chapter is widely seen as the best chapter in the entire game, something that most fans and critics can agree on. So, why was this chapter so popular? Firstly, as stated before, this chapter took the game in a much darker direction, both lore-wise and gameplay-wise. The new details revealed about the “Hour of Joy,” a key event in the Poppy Playtime timeline involving all the toys, who were actually children who had been the subject of experiments and turned into monsters called “bigger bodies,” killing everyone in the factory and leaving it abandoned for years. These new details unveiled the future potential of the game and left everyone wanting more. In addition, with the introduction of multiple new characters, including an entire line of toys called the Smiling Critters, the most important one being Catnap, the main antagonist of the chapter, the game itself was much creepier (the setting being an orphanage for the children who were experimented on and ultimately turned into monsters). Lastly, with the new and improved gameplay mechanisms, the chapter became incredibly popular and attracted large amounts of attention. There is much more to Chapter 3, including minor antagonists who were also well-received, but I’ll save that for another day. The most important part is that Chapter 3 of Poppy Playtime marked a major increase in popularity, which set high expectations for Chapter 4, which was marked to be released a year later. So, the question is, did Chapter 4 live up to these expectations?
Well, the answer is no. Far from it, in fact. Unfortunately, for many fans, Chapter 4 was a huge letdown. Why, you may ask? First of all, many have declared that everything went wrong even before the game was released, and that several issues lay in the marketing itself. During the marketing phase, the first leaked character was a dinosaur “bigger body” toy called Pianosaurus, who was, you guessed it, a fusion of a piano and a dinosaur. This character quickly became popular among fans, who appreciated the design, which was cute, creative, and creepy all at once. And so, Mob Entertainment kept hyping up the character, as if preparing the fans for a major character. In the process, the chapter’s main antagonist, Doey the Doughman, was barely teased, only revealed at the end when the game thumbnail was released. However, when the game was actually released, fans were shocked and angry to find that Pianosaurus, despite all that hype, had quite literally less than 10 seconds of screentime in the entire game, which is about 5 hours on an average playthrough. In a nutshell, the player encounters Pianosaurus, and before we even get a good look at him, he is brutally smashed to pieces and eaten by Doey the Doughman, who we then meet. Wow. All that hype for nothing… Countless fans were in disbelief, commenting, “Justice for Pianosaurus.” I agree. Pianosaurus did not deserve that. However, this was not the only issue that people had with the chapter. The whole game was incredibly laggy due to the quick production turnaround time that Mob had set for themselves, hoping to get the game out at the one-year mark. This ruined many fans’ experiences, with some games crashing before they even started and others being unplayable due to some sequences being so buggy that they couldn’t even be completed. Overall, the game felt rushed, both lore-wise and game-wise. On top of the bugs, the story seemed to progress way too quickly, with not one, not two, not three, but four new antagonists being introduced in the same game within a five hour timespan, all of which died, by the way, and that’s not even including the fact that yet another toy line was introduced, the Nightmare Critters, which were essentially the counterpart of the Smiling Critters. With all of these issues with the chapter, fans were disappointed, especially after all the hype from Chapter 3 leading up to Chapter 4. They could only hope that Chapter 5 would be better.
And now, after much waiting, it is finally time to get into the most recent chapter of Poppy Playtime Chapter 5, titled Broken Things. While fans were concerned about the rushed nature of the previous chapter being carried on into this one, the hype around the upcoming chapter was still rapidly increasing. From the start, Mob Entertainment put much effort into marketing this chapter as the “best one yet”, with new character teasers and holiday art containing secrets about the new chapter early on. Even the developers in the Discord servers declared their love for the chapter, both in terms of gameplay and character design. Much of the hype around the chapter came from the upcoming face reveal of the Prototype, the overarching villain that has been present in nearly every chapter thus far. However, all that had been revealed of him thus far was his arm and hand, the rest being shrouded in mystery. That was all about to change, though, as fans began speculating about his appearance by picking apart every holiday art piece and teaser. In addition to the Prototype, a new character had also been attracting attention: Lily Lovebraids. This character was first teased after fans found out that the name had been copyrighted by Mob Entertainment a few months prior, and the first concrete evidence came in the Halloween 2025 art, which depicted a tree with braid-like root patterns and a human-like hand. Seriously, these fans are insane! How do you even spot that? After that, the character was repeatedly hinted at with lily flowers and even in a cinematic trailer released around two months before the game’s official release, where we got a full reveal of Lily’s doll-like lower half and her voice. Fans were incredibly excited for these characters, many drawing fan art before the full designs were even revealed. The lore was also highly anticipated, with the fate of the Poppy doll, the game’s main toy protagonist who has been with the player throughout the chapters, being unknown. With every teaser and trailer that was released, fans were growing more and more excited.
Well, up until the official cinematic trailer dropped just days before the game’s release, that is. In the trailer, fans finally received what they had long been waiting for: Lily Lovebraid’s face reveal. And it was very different from their expectations. While some loved the design, the vast majority were disappointed. While some dealt with it and moved on, others were angry, choosing to speak out and post about her “chopped” design. What was so bad about it, you may ask? Well, for one, it was her lack of a nose. Yep, you heard that right! No nose. While this isn’t too crazy, as she is a toy, there’s just something off about her face that makes her more funny-looking than unsettling (to me at least). Many even posted redesigns of her with slight tweaks that made her face look more aesthetically pleasing. Some critics even stated that Lily Lovebraids did not look like a Poppy Playtime monster, being far too small and strange-looking, not fitting in with the creepy theme. Just days before the game was released, the excitement was already diminishing.
And as if things weren’t bad enough, disaster struck just one day before the release of the game. The Prototype’s full design was leaked. Full 3d model and all, along with a short animation. Pretty bad, huh? Fans were initially skeptical about the legitimacy of the design, especially as there had been several fan designs circulating on the internet already, but all doubts disappeared when Mob Entertainment decided to attempt to wipe every single repost off the face of the earth, going through extensive efforts to clear the Discord server of everything. Fans were outraged. Just one day before the release of the game, they had been spoiled by some random, spiteful person.
So, now the question arises: with all the difficulties encountered throughout the Poppy Playtime franchise, did Chapter 5 manage to redeem it and deliver quality content to its fans?
